'92 Sidekick diagnostic plug - anyone got a pic?

Sorry, meant to post this here so it's a duplicate thread.

I forgot to take a picture of it, but it's a largish white plug with a bunch of pins in it.  I'm not positive, but I think it had more than 4 pins.  I had this harness modified for use in a Samurai by Aftermarket 4x4 and this is the connector that he's labeled as for getting the trouble codes.  It's a '92 Sidekick 4 door JLX 16v motor.

Anyone have a pic of the diagnostic connector and which pins to connect to pull the codes?  I don't have a FSM so am going by the Haynes manual, is the procedure the same...connect pins while ignition is off, then turn ignition on and count the blinks?  I know for a fact the plug looks nothing like the one in the Haynes manual.

Thanks, Scot

The older zuks had 4 pin connectors the newer ones six.  Checking the ECM connections should tell you which you need.

FOUR pin:
#1 VIO ................to............. ECM C1-9
#2 BLU/YEL .........to............. ECM C1-3
#3 BLK ................to............. Grnd
#4 BLUl/RED ........to............. ECM C1-7

SIX pin:
#1 not used
#2 BLU/YEL ........to.............. ECM C1-17
#3 VIO/YEL .........to............. ECM C1-14
#4 BLK ...............to.............. Grnd
#5 BLU/RED .......to.............. ECM C1-6
#6 VIO ...............to.............. ECM C1-3

Thanks, Joel...which wires do you connect to get the codes?

okay, according to a search at Ack's FAQ for diagnostic, this web page (http://www.troublecodes.net/suzuki/) indicates that you must jumper between B and C. on the four-pin plug next to the battery.  Likewise at http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,28566.0.html.

Semi-useful information there....

I would bet that pin C is equal to pin 3 (black) - the ground pin by warbird's post.  It follows that pin 2 (Blu/Yel) is B.

Somewhere in the vastness that is the internet there is a picture of that connector describing which pin is which.  Unfortunately, I cannot put my finger on it right now...

You might try a search for engine wiring at Ack's Faq.  The proper traKick diagram (there are several...) might also reveal the connector pinout in better detail.

I hope that this helps...

YUP!

The BLU/YEL is for "Diagnostic Request".  Ground that and the computer will output the DTC's to the CEL/MIL (if your OBD is working correctly).

I'm not quite sure what you mean with all the acronyms, warbird, but I know this:

For ODB1 trucks (pre '96) you get blink codes on the check engine light (oh - I get it! Check Engine Light = CEL!) when you follow the jumpering procedure. The links in my previous posts also have those blink-code tables.

Sorry    It's a leftover military thing

Here's your pics Scot

Hey, thanks for the pics!  I'm pretty sure my connector doesn't look like either one of those.  I'll grab a pic of it next time I get a chance to work on the truck.  It doesn't live with me...that's frustrating when I'm trying to figure stuff out and can't just go outside to the garage to look.

In any case, I will look for a blue/yellow and a black wire.  Hopefully that will be the clue to figuring it out.

Hey!

Thanks for your service to America!

Scot,

It occurred to me today (while tinkering in the garage today) that you might be talking about the diagnostic connector that's usually found under the dash(?).

GM/Suzuki used a 12 pin connector for OBD1.  It has a VOI/GRN output wire (from ECM C2-16) at the "M" position.

OBD2 is a standardized 16 pin connector shaped like an upside-down trapezoid.  Only pic I have is of one of these and its not very good in terms of showing the connector face.

I'll be able to get a pic on Monday. The suspense is killing me!  I don't think it looks like that one either. Thanks much for the pics though!

Okay, finally got some pics of the plugs.

The white plug is labelled "test" so I had assumed it was the diagnostic plug that I would be using.  Anyone know what these two plugs are for?

Then I happened to find this plug.  Look familiar?  Remember, I've never claimed to be very observant.

So the procedure is to short the blue/yellow to black, turn the ignition on, and count the flashing lights?  Just unplug the ECU to clear codes?

That's it (in a nutshell).  Code will flash three time then pause and the next code will flash (if any).  DCT 12 indicates OBD is fuctioning correctly and there are no other codes.

O 1 2 O O 1 2 3 4 O 1 2 O O 1 2 3 4 O 1 2 O O 1 2 3 etc.

Cool, thanks!

BTW - the black plug in the top pic is the Data Link Connector (DLC).  That's where you plug in a code reader or diagnostic tool.  Good luck finding someone with an OBD1 scan tool AND the GM/Suzuki programing for it (dealership maybe?).  I have no idea what the white plug is for.

The white plug with the black rubber cap is the Duty Check Data Link Connector (also DLC  ).

The weird thing is the white plug in the top pic (next to the big black plug), Sean Devinney (he did the harness mod) says "test" on it.  There are the same color wires going to that plug as to the 4 wire plug with the rubber cap.  Weird.  If it hadn't been so darned long since I pulled the engine out of the Sidekick, I might remember where everything came from.

Umm....from your IFS thread on the same subject.......

The plugs in the top pic are not used for anything.  Nothing gets plugged into them.  IIRC, one of the plugs shares the same wires as the diagnostic plug.....you can actually short the pins in one of those plugs and get the CEL to flash, instead of shorting them in the 4 pin plug by the battery.

Thanks, I did see your response.  Your help is always MUCH appreciated!

Gotta call Sean Devinney about my wiring harness so I'll ask him what the deal is with that plug.  I would say it's just unnecessary junk but why did he write "test" on it when there's a perfectly good test plug (the one with the boot).  Makes  no difference but now I'm really curious.

He probably wrote "test" on it to let you know you could use that plug to read/check the codes.  But that's just a guess.

Tried calling Sean today but my phone was acting up so I gave up.  I'll try again later...I'm sure he can't wait for me to call and bug him again.
